Ebook About NATIONAL BESTSELLER"Bob Lee Swagger is a true American literary icon."--Mark Greaney, New York Times Bestselling Author of Mission CriticalIn this blazing new thriller from Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Hunter, master sniper Bob Lee Swagger takes on his biggest job to date...and confronts an assassin with skills that match his own. When Bob Lee Swagger is approached by a woman who lost a son to war and has spent the years since risking all that she has to find the sniper who pulled the trigger, he knows right away he'll do everything in his power to help her. But what begins as a favor becomes an obsession, and soon Swagger is back in the action, teaming up with the Mossad, the FBI, and local American law enforcement as he tracks a sniper who is his own equal...and attempts to decipher that assassin's ultimate target before it's too late. With all-too-real threats and a twisty, masterful storytelling, Game of Snipers is another gripping addition to a bestselling Bob Lee Swagger series.Book Game of Snipers (Bob Lee Swagger) Review :
Stephen Hunter opened the Bob Lee Swagger series with the release of Point of Impact in 1993 featuring a good old boy from Arkansas serving as a Marine sniper in Vietnam. He is a genius when it came to guns and he has serious combat savvy, but what I think makes Bobby Lee such a hit is the way he always tries to stand up for the little guy even against overpowering opposition. That opposition often came from our own side and seeing Bobby out play the power suit folks time and time again gives me assurance that some things are right about the world. Hunter followed the solid success of Point of Impact with two more well written entrees, Black Light (Bob Swagger #2/1996) and Time to Hunt (#3/1998). The next four Swagger releases were well written but seemed tepid with dubious plot lines. After 15 years in the wilderness Hunter released The Third Bullet (#8/2013) and Sniper's Honor (#9/2014) displaying a writing skill and sense of pacing that displayed significantly more nuance and maturity showing those years had not gone to waste. I took a pass on G-Man (#10/2017) which had Bob sharing billing with flash backs to his father's adventures as a lawman decades before. It seemed disjointed and did not work for me.But on to the current book, after a brief and brutal vignette of a long range shooting, Game of Snipers (#11/2019) opens as a 72 year old Bob Swagger is rocking on the porch of his ranch house in the wilds of Idaho taking stock of all he has to be thankful for. Behind that thanksgiving perhaps lies a tinge of boredom. The cheapo rental car that pulls up his driveway soon puts an end to that as a woman on a mission gets out of the car. She spins a tale of suffering, perseverance and heroism that quickly enfolds Bobby in another adventure. The whole scene on the porch was done with such consummate skill that it is my nominee for Stephen Hunter's most eloquent writing to date. Swagger rounds up a posse of familiar faces and some refreshing new ones as a capable and gradually sympathetic villain emerges from the mist. Once more Bob Lee Swagger mounts up and sets out to right wrongs as he takes on all who stand in his way. With the exception of a slight drag in the book's middle with one close call too many as he tracks down the bad guy Stephen Hunter turns out this solid entry with his best writing to date.$13.99/book price divided by Amazon typical read time of 6 hours, 17 minutes=$2.23/average hourly reading cost This novel is not for everyone. There is so much firearm information that the normal reader of Stephen Hunter might be put off by the detail. For those of us interested in this subject, Mr. Hunter provided a wealth of information that many have not seen before. The author's plethora of detail is much greater than any provided in his past works but is necessary in this case to inform (and teach) the casual reader that long range shooting is much more than what it appears. This information is provided to show how a talented and experienced terrorist both prepares for a scheduled shot and also plans for a safe extraction. Good old Bob Lee Swagger comes back on scene to assist law enforcement in understanding how someone like this functions, how he feels and deals with preparation, how he gathers the materials needed to complete the execution of this plan, and the network of support staff and money necessary. Bob is 72 now and his memory and actions are amusing to someone of his age group. Some of these situations will be humorous to the younger generations but are shockingly realistic for us older folks.Mr. Hunter provides his normal fast paced action using the taut and descriptive language he is known for. He works in several timely subjects affecting our world today and makes them part of the normal scenery and dialogue of his story. If you enjoyed "Day Of The Jackal" by Frederick Forsyth you will fascinated by the attention to detail adhered to by the antagonist in this novel. Bob Swagger and his crew are tenacious in their discovery of minor clues and their attempts to put them together into something meaningful (and therefore helpful). You have to admire both sides of this story where even the villain has a few redeeming qualities. But everyone should be thankful (yet aware) that a situation like this has not yet developed in our country. My guess is that it is just a matter of time. Hopefully our LEOs will be up to the task. If not, someone needs to get Swagger out of retirement again.
